''Bird Neighbors'', published in 1897, was the first major work by nature writer Neltje Blanchan.〔Shearin, Gloria. 2008. (Neltje Blanchan. ) In: Patterson, D., Thompson, R., Bryson, S., ''et al.'', ''Early American Nature Writers''. Westport, CT: Greenwood Press, ISBN 0313346801. pp.62–69.〕 The book combined scientific data with color illustrations, accessible language, and personal experience reflecting Blanchan's joy in nature.〔 In his introduction, naturalist John Burroughs praised it as "reliable" as well as "written in a vivacious strain by a real bird lover."〔Welker, Robert H. 1971. (Doubleday, Neltje Blanchan De Graff. ) In: James, E. T., James, J. W., and Boyer, P. S., ''Notable American Women, 1607–1950: A Biographical Dictionary'', Volume 2. Harvard University Press, ISBN 0674627342. pp.508–509.〕 After discussing the scientific classification of birds by families, Blanchan lists 19 "habitats" where birds can be found (such as "birds seen near the edges of woods" and "birds found near salt water"),〔 and groups the birds themselves by size and color.〔Oakes,Elizabeth H. 2010. ''(Encyclopedia of World Scientists )'', Infobase Publishing, ISBN 1438118821. p 190.〕 The 52 color illustrations were produced by photographing stuffed birds in front of appropriate backgrounds, since cameras of the time could not take good photographs of living birds.〔Dunlap, Thomas R. 2011. ''(In the Field, Among the Feathered: A History of Birders & Their Guides )'', Oxford University Press, ISBN 0199734593. p 47.〕 The published photographs were also limited by the color printing technologies of the time, and some of the darker birds have been described as looking like "they had been dipped in shoe polish."〔 Among the "birds conspicuously black" in the book is the red-winged blackbird, which is introduced this way:
On publication, ''The New York Times'' praised the book's color prints and its ability to be "understood by all readers,"〔''The New York Times'', December 4, 1897, ("Books and Authors" )〕 and the following year included it in a list of "150 books for summer reading."〔''The New York Times'', June 25, 1898, ("150 Books for Summer Reading: Selected and Classified List with a Brief Notice of Each Book" )〕 ''Bird Neighbors'' sold over 250,000 copies,〔 helping to make the author the best-selling female nature writer of her time.〔Sterling, Keir B. 1997. (Neltje Blanchan De Graff Doubleday (1865–1918). ) In: Grinstein, L. S., Biermann, C. A., and Rose, K. R., ''Women in the Biological Sciences: A Biobibliographic Sourcebook'', Greenwood Publishing Group, ISBN 0313291802. pp.120–123.〕 Originally published by Doubleday, the book was republished by the Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation in 1999. ==See also== *''Nature's Garden: An Aid to Knowledge of our Wild Flowers and their Insect Visitors'' *''Wild Flowers Worth Knowing'' *Birdwatching *History of photography 抄文引用元・出典: フリー百科事典『 ウィキペディア(Wikipedia)』 ■ウィキペディアで「Bird Neighbors」の詳細全文を読む スポンサード リンク
